On Your Mark. Get Set. Grow!

Over my short years of ministry (20 plus now) I have been around many different kinds of people.  I love it when you show up at a house on visitation and someone shoves a beer under the couch or they try to extinguish their smoking materials.  You might hide the physical evidence; but, the smell lingers.

I understand there are instances where people are addicted to things like nicotine or alcohol.  If you never seek to get victory over these besetting sins they will just continually drag you down.

If you had a child that was five years old and still the size of a newborn would you not think something is wrong?  I would hope so.

Well, how about the Christian life?  If you are a Christian and have been for a number of years and you still are not getting victory over besetting sins maybe you need to make some changes in your own life.  You cannot expect to grow spiritually if you are still enslaved to sin.  It just will not work.

It is time to want to grow more spiritually than to satisfy the flesh.  Look at Hebrews 5:11, “Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.”  A big reason we do not grow spiritually is because we are “dull of hearing.  The word “dull” means sluggish or lazy.  There are too many sluggish or lazy Christians in the Church.  It is high time we wake up and get going for the cause of Christ!

So, how are you doing?

The Sluggard

There are days that I don’t have the energy to hardly get out of bed.  I do because my family counts on me to wake up and perform certain tasks like make breakfast.

I see in our nation that we are becoming a nation of sluggards both physically and spiritually.  I remember when I was in school I was given the privilege of having my own telephone line in my room.  As  young person I was on the phone all the time (my family thought literally).  I remember one time I called the other line in the house and asked my mother for a glass of water.  I was laughing so hard that I could hardly do it.  I was truly joking; but, I don’t know that they believed me.

The other day my wife as having a conversation with someone who is a Church going person.  This person expressed that they did not know that the Bible talked about ants.  I told her that they needed to read the Bible to not only learn about the ant; but, to learn the habits of the ant.  If we would be spiritually like the ant then we would not find ourselves in such a place.  Look at Proverbs 6:6, “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:”

Now it comes down to you and I are we spiritual sluggards?  What is our attitude toward the Word of God?  I want to be so familiar with the Word of God that It simply flows out of me.

So, how are you doing?

Second Class Ticket

Today we will look at the stage coach analogy again.  We will look at the second class ticket holder and how they relate to the Church.

2nd class ticket – Others think they have a 2nd class ticket. They ride along until there is a problem and they suddenly become detached spectators. They watch someone else do the work and fix the problem or they even run off to another Church.  Look at the description in Luke 10:32, “And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.”

We do not issue 1st or 2nd class tickets in the Church.  The Church is full of detached spectators today.  Oh, they pitch in a little tip when the plate comes by them.  That is if they take the time to show up for services.  Let the Pastor mention a financial need and the first thing they say is, “All he talks about is money.”  They do not consider that it is a real need.

A 2nd class ticket holder will have to leave the coach if it breaks down.  They are not required to help make repairs.  They may sit there and just sit, soak and sour while someone else does the work.  Their hand will not be soiled.  I pray that I do not find myself with this attitude.
