Appearance

A couple days ago I was walking through the house and I saw a “fuzzy” on the floor.  I kicked it with my foot to move it out of the way.  It is so far down to pick it up off the floor.  The floor gets farther and farther away each year.

When I kicked at this “fuzzy” it ran away.  I ran and got a facial tissue and squished it and then sent it off to a watery grave at the waste water treatment plant.

I started thinking about this little “fuzzy” creature.  It is like so many people.  We hide in social media.  We hide in books.  We hide in food.  We hide in drugs and alcohol.  You name it and people try to hide in it.  It is like the rearview mirror on your vehicle.  Objects do not appear as they really are.

Look at II Thessalonians 5:22, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”  If we are God’s child then we should want to keep away from things that do not appear what they really are.  I have a friend that told of a bar in his college days that had a name that sounded like a candy store if I remember correctly.

So, if we are going to be God’s kind of people then we are going to have to be what we appear to be.  We must be in public what we are in private.  We must be in private what we are in public.  We must be consistent Christians that follow Christ. So, how are you doing?

Someone Is Watching

Yesterday evening I was watching the television show “Undercover Boss” while my wife caught up on her rest.  It was an interesting episode.  The boss brought in two different employees that had less than acceptable performance.  I must say that he handled them much better than I would have ever handled them.  I would have blown my cover immediately and fired these two guys for sure.

What I saw was a man that had come from a background of alcohol abuse and suicide attempts showing someone else the compassion he needed to get out of what bound him.  This man did not appear to be a Christian; but, he did exhibit some qualities that were Christ-like.

One young man called a customer a liar over the telephone.  This turned out to be a cry for help from this young man.  The owner took him under his wing and gave him a second change.  It reminded me of a man named Jonah somewhat.  God gave Jonah a second chance.

The other man sat and shared with a female customer about some things that had taken place during a shift he worked that should not have been shared with a female let alone a customer of the business.  He was offered a second chance that started with sexual harassment classes.  Then the owner gave him some money to help with his mother’s medical bills.

Why so I relate this to you?  Well, I don’t know about you; but, I have needed mercy in my life like these two examples need mercy.  One thing that was brought home to me in a more vivid way is that we are being watched.  Everywhere we go we are watched.  You hear me and other Preachers say all the time that we are being watched and people want what we have.  Guess what.  It is true.  I saw it on that show.

Hurting people are looking for people that are real people with real answers to their very real problems.  Both men were ashamed at the very least that they were caught; but, in the commentary at the end of the show I think they were really sorry.

We have to be careful what we say, how we act and how we interact with others because we are being watched closely by those around us.  Even more importantly we are being watched by our Heavenly Father.  We want to please him by everything we do and say.  Look at Proverbs 5:21, “For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.”

So, how are you doing?

Perspective

A farmer went to his pastor for counsel.  He looked worn out and was obviously not doing well.  He complained that there was not enough room in his home with  nine people living there.  The pastor thought about it for a minute and told the farmer to get a goat and bring it in the house and come back next week and report to him.

The next week the farmer comes in for counseling and looks even worse.  He said that goat did not work.  As a matter of fact things are even worse with it living with us.  It stinks and does it’s business all over the house.

The pastor thought for a minute and told the farmer to get rid of the goat and report back next week.  The next week the farmer arrived looking refreshed and thanked the pastor for helping him.  It seems when the goat left the house became a place of peace and rest.  There were still all nine people living there.

Sometimes in life it is all about perspective.  It does not always appear what it really is.  I think of Saul when Samuel went to find him.  God gave Samuel excellent counsel.  Look at I Samuel 16:7, “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. ”

The next time you seem to be burdened down with the trials of life try to look at them from God’s perspective.  It is not easy.  When we see things as He sees them it will revolutionize us.

So, how are you doing?
