God’s Promises

When I was about fourteen years old my parents divorced.  This was very tragic for me as a young boy.  My life changed a lot from there on out.  I remember many times sitting and watching out the window of my room waiting for my father to come get me for his weekend visitation.  All too many times I sat there waiting and watching and finally went to bed because he did not show up.

It is so important for all who know Jesus Christ as their Saviour to be people of character.  Part of this is keeping our promises.  God keeps His promises.  His Word is full of His promises.  The Word of God has promises by the thousands.

As we look at the last verse of this chapter something caught me.  Look at Psalm 23:6, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”  What caught my attention is the word “shall”.  In other words, it is a done deal.  God said it and that is it.  He is the Ultimate Promise Keeper.  If He were not then how would we know that we are truly going to Heaven?  We could not know for sure.  Thank God for His promises!  We need to be standing on the promises and quit just sitting on the premises.

So, how are you doing?

A Command To Walk

We celebrated my Grandmother’s 90th birthday recently.  I took upon myself to set up the festivities.  The day of the party we arrived early to her apartment and began to set up in the community room.  By the time the party started I was exhausted and sweating profusely.

By the time we arrived back home I was so tired that I could hardly stand up, let alone walk.  Yet, I had to get out of the van and walk in the house.  Not only that; but, I had to help my wife; who was exhausted too and more so, unload the van.  I kept telling myself, “Left foot.  Right foot.”

Another of God’s commands to Jeremiah was to walk.  Look at Jeremiah 6:16, “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.”  The word “walk” means to walk or carry.  Some days it seems to be easy to walk with God.  Other days it seems nearly impossible to walk with God.

It does not matter how we “feel”.  We have been commanded to walk with God and to carry the message of the gospel to the world around us.  Our problem is that we allow things to cloud our thinking and perspective and then we get knocked off course and we sit down and quit walking and carrying.  We have to remember it is a command and not a suggestion.

So, how are you doing?

A Gift From God 4

I don’t know about you; but, for me it seems like Christmas was a long time ago.  It has only been a little over a month ago.  Time goes by so quickly it seems.  When I think of gifts I think of Christmas a lot.  I remember my dad playing with my toys before I could and the smells of the food cooking at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.  Precious memories!

As I was thinking about the truth of “A Gift From God” I remembered the following verses Isaiah 9:6-7, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

What better gift could we be given?  None!  Not only was this “son” born and given; but, He would do all these things promised too.  He keeps on giving and giving to us.  He saves us if we will trust in Him and He keeps us saved.  Then He is our “Wonderful Counsellor”, “The mighty God”, “The everlasting Father”, “The Prince of Peace”.  He will rule from His throne over His kingdom.

These are sure promises from God.  Notice what He tells us, “the LORD of hosts will perform this.”  You can count on this because it is a for sure thing because He has promised it.

There is not much in this world you can count on anymore; but, one thing is absolutely sure.  You can count on the promises of God because they are true.

So, how are you doing?
