Too Close

Monday evening I took off to the field to chisel plow.  I really enjoy being able to work on the farm again.  I sometimes think about how my family is feeding America and the world with their efforts.  This is a powerful thought to me.

I worked Monday evening until about 4a.m. on Tuesday (I would not recommend this).  I was glad I did because the rain came in and we cannot work again.  The chisel plow I use is about as wide as the tractor I drive.  This means I have to get really close to the edge of the field and this causes me to come in contact with large tree limbs.

Late Monday evening a large tree limb hit my outside rear view mirror and knocked it around and that is not unusual.  It is designed to break back.  It did with such force that the mirror was broken out.  I searched in hopes of finding the mirror glass.  I found a corner of it.  So, Tuesday afternoon we loaded up and went to the parts counter at John Deere and got replacements.  Now, I will have to go replace what I have broken.  There is a cost.

As I was thinking about this adventure I had a spiritual thought.  If I had not gotten so close to the tree line I would not have broken the mirror and would still have the money I paid for the replacements to pay bills with.  It is a domino effect.

Now, let’s think about sin.  We want to get so very close to things that we know we have no business being around.  We think we can get a little closer and not get hurt.  Then “Bang!” goes the mirror so to speak.  Look at Acts 28:3, “And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.”  Yes, these are different circumstances; but, the principle is the same.  The “viper” of sin will be “fastened” on your if you are not careful.  We must flee sin like it is a snake.

So, how are you doing?
